In an eloqueut appeal to the Bench to be placed on probation, Poyner said that had he admitted the fact that he was out of work he would have been homeless.
He was living in daily hope of obtaining employment so that he could discharge the debts he had incurred.
Something of Poyner's powers to charm young women was disclosed by Detective-sergeant Pains. He stated that Poyner had been educated for the scholastic pro- fession, but failed to
pass his examination.
