CORRESPONDENCE-
YELLOW.
[To the Editor of the China Mail.}
Sir-Your word as a British gentleman juffices to signify that I misinterpreted your verse;
With every candour I wish to offer the China Mail and you my sincerest apologies for that part of my correspondence. Only where it refers to yourselves, for I am now convinced that you are both true friends of our community. For the rest my letter rankles with truth and should under no circumstances be taken as an insult to your com munity, and I_shall-stand-by-my- guns, if needs be.
And now Mr. Editor I shall do penance for my insinuations as far as you are concerned and:"
No more tell the shrill call of the
lark,
Labyranthine ways of men, sinful,
dark-
No more to praise the lustrous
sun,
Eternity and the Beloved One
Not mad but saturated with satire I love, live and sigh, retire To the kingdom of my dreams To burst no more, into poetic
whims
And poetry often born of grief.
and tears
Are refining aches of yester-years And its propulsion is not wrought Of earth-But the Almigty hand
of God.
H. M. SILVA
And before concluding let me say that in my graduating years in the school of life I shall always remember the words of your great Tennyson:
Strong son of God, Immortal
Love
Whom we that have not seen thy
face,
By faith and faith alone embrace
Bellering where we cannot prove."
Yours etc,
H. M. SILVA.

OUR POOR DAY.
WO
On Monday morning as wend our way to office we shall encounter the pretty rose seilers of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, which in this way opens its annuai appeal to the public of Hongkong. The Society celebrates this year the 60th anniversary of its estab- lishment in this colony, so that it should hardly be necessary for us to make its activities known to our readers. Yet its grand work of tharity is performed so quietly and unostentatiously that the name of the Society comes before the gen- eral public but once a year, in Dec- ember, when it makes its annual appeal for the colony's.support,
As to the work of the Society, the annual report just issued speaks for itself: a total of 1,034 visits paid by members to the poor in their homes during the first nine months of this year; $5,643 expended daring the same period on relief in money and provisions-mainly la provisions; $2,130 paid as rent
behalf of the
poor, two vernacular schools maintained and fees paid in other schools for the children of the poor, the total expenditure on education being $5,643 during the first nine months of this year. These are among the many items
on
which figure in the report issued a 3.30 pm few days ago, and they serve to ..... 6 p.m.
give us an idea of the extent of the work being done by the Society, especially when we remember that before relief or other assistance is given, each case is carefully investigated as to its merits. To this heavy expenditure

Its objects and reasons are given, inter alta, as follows:
The bill gives the Building under the patronage of His Excel- Authority a power of modification, lency the Governor. Monday will but this power will not extend in be "Our Poor Day," and as we meet the pretty rose sellers on our way to town, or when they disturb us in our offices in the midst of the morning's. pile of work, let us remember the grand work of chari- ty for which they are appealing and though it is still early in December let us try to get the Christmas spirit.
"Section 179 of the Public Health and Buildings' Ordinance, 1903, provides that every domestic building erected on land leased from the Crown after the 20th February, 1903, shall be provided with an open space; equal in area to not less than one half of the roofed-over area of such building, and that a scavenging lane must also be provided by the owner without compensation. Section 180 of the Ordinance provides that every domestic building erected or re-erected on land leased from the Crown before the 21st February, 1903, shall be provided with, an open space equal in area to hot less than one third of the roofed-over area of such building, and that the owner a must also provida, A.
