-RESISTANCE ORDERS RESCINDED.

BERLIN, September 28.

A Gazette rescinds all passive resistance

at an early meeting of the Imperial Conference orders

At present he could only say that when he assumed office there was an atmosphere of restraint, almost

of distrust, between France and Britain and it had been his good fortune in his interview with M Poincaré to help restore an atmosphere of 'con fidence. "No more or no less but I think there is now both in Paris and in London recognition of the importance of the entente in this way that without it a European settlement will be far more difficult. Indeed the events of the last two or three weeks pointed that, to those who have eyes to see, the best hope of settlement lies in the intimate relationship of France and Britain."

BRITISH LABOURITES DEMAND.

LONDON, September 27.

A conference between the Trade Union Con- gress and the executive of the Labour Party carried a resolution, demanding that Mr. Baldwin im- mediately convoke Parliament in view_of_the gravity of the situation in Germany and its conse- quent inevitable effect on trade and employment in Britain.

HANDED BACK.

ITALIANS EVACUATE CORFU.

ATHENS, September 26. Corfu was handed over to the Greeks this morning.

STILL SUSPICIOUS?

CORFU, September 27; The town is in perfect order under the resumed civil administration. No threats have been made against Italian citizens, hence the population was surprised to see four Italian dreadnoughts, and seven destroyers reappear from behind the Island of Vido and anchor before the town. The cause of their reappearance is not known.

GOVERNOR WELCOMED · BACK.

LATER.

The apprehensions of the population were dis- *pelled when the evacuation began. The Italian flag was lowered amid salutes from the Italian fleet and a Grook destroyer. The Italian flagship salited the Greek dag when it was hoisted. Forty thousand Corfiotes welcomed the Governor, when he landed and shouldered him to the prefecture. British and French flags were waved by the crowd which demonstrated enthusiastically in front of the British and French consulates.

It appears that Herr Ehert signed a decree pro- claiming a state of emergency throughout Germany immediately after a meeting of the Imperial Govern- ment which was convoked at midnight in con- sequence of the news of the appointment of the Bavarian Dictator. That completely surprised the 'Government as the aims of his organisation have hitherto been regarded as practically indistinguish- able from those of Hitler's According to a telegram from Munich, Von Kahr's first action was to prohibit the fourteen mass meetings arranged by the Nation-!

WORLD CONFERENCES WANTED..

GENEVA, September 27. The League of Nations Assembly adopted resolutions submitted by the Opium Committee, including a resolution urging countries which have not yet ratified the Opium Convention of 1912 to do so soon and apply its provisions. Mr. Chao Hsin-chu declared that the best means to control the traffic were to rarify and apply the Convention. Dame. Edith Lyttelton announced that Britain approved the proposal for two conferences-firstly a conference of interested governments to devise practical measures to reduce the consumption of opium in countries where its use was temporarily maintained and especially for the suppression of opium production in China and secondly a conference ofall the members of the League and all parties of the Convention of 1912. The Maharajah Nawanagar déclared that the Government of India would co- operate with the League while Mirza Riza (Persia) urged that the economic character of opium produc- tion in Persia required consideration.
