Workmen engaged at Marhle Arch, near famous Tyburn, laying a water main to Cricklewood, made some important finds including a stirrup
which-who knows? might have belonged to the famous Claude Duval, who was buried near this spot.
The finds included eight skulls. several in splendid condition, and one or two showing braises, re- ceived no doubt in some affray which led to the gallows at Tyburn Tree. There were many human bones and spinal columns, mute evidence, maybe, of grün Tyburn scenes of long ago.
To an interviewer the workmen expressed a hope that they might
find the bones of Oliver Cromwell, who in 1660, by order of Charles IL, was dragged from his resting- place at Westminster and strong to the gibbet in his funeral attire near this spot.
In olden times Tylura Tre seldom, lacked, a victim, and on occasions there were as many as 24 criminals hanging in a triangle, each side of which accommodated eight malefactors.
