Miles beyond the great ramparts of snowy peaks separating the two Buddhists States of Sikkim and Tibet, far from the cares and wor. ries of this world, among the rising prominent range of crags of nantains that rise out of the arid plains to the north of Gyanste little white specks may be seen nestling on the highest rocky cliffs. These white specks, says the Eng- lishman, are the abode of the Nuns of Tibet in the monastery dedicat-whom the silver butter lamps burn. I. Mercy. Births and deaths appeal to them, for they mean pain, and to heal and alleviate suffering are the factors that have made them take the vow of renunciation from all things worldly.
Dressed in their red bukos

They live their quiet secluded lives in the quiet mastery, carry ing out similar monastic duties as these allotted to the monks, of the larger monasteries of Tashilumpo, Shigatzo and Sera.
DUTY AND LOVE.
Their fare is frugal as their lives are bare and, as they enjoin duly and love to the children, they practise what they preach towards Uwir good Abbess, an old woman of many summers with a kindly face and soul, whose days are not long before she too, like her predecessors, will lie on the lay of Dolna in the love and peace which passeth all understanding, and for which she has striven all the days
of herlife.
Visitors are allowed to see the monastery and are treated with every respect and courtesy; they are given the seat of honour in the carved chair placed in the end of the large reception hall and regaled to a repast of Tibetan barley cakes. and butter tea (chae). Neither are very tempting, but so persistent are the good nuns in their kindness to show their hospitality that it would be churlish indeed to dis- apsint them.

The service over, the Abbess beckons to the stranger to ap proach. With bowed head he stands before her while she pro- nounces the benediction, holding her two hands over his head. It is a very high honour, is this two- handed blessing and none receive it who have not eamed the faith and trust of the nuus during their visit to the monastery.
