Labour in 1926.
Mr. Sidney Webb, M.P., Presid- ent of the Labour Party, points out that if the curve of Labour votes continues to rise at the rate record- cd since 1900, the Labour Party will have a clear Parliamentary majority about the year 1926. "Mr. Webb's prediction at the Labour Party Conference of a Labour maj. ority in 1926 was not, I think, meant to be taken seriously," says the Outlook. "Mr. Snowden's discuss- ion of the prospects of Labour-
Liberal Coalition is much more in- triguing. Mr. Snowden himself, as a purist in politics, is against such a combination; but a great many of his colleagues are not." Cold Bath Ruse.
Captain Ehrhardt's escape from Leipzig Prison has caused tremen- dous excitement. His trial was fixed for the 23rd inst., and the charges against him were alleged high treason in connection with the Kapp putsch and perjury. It appears that Ehrhardt asked for a cold bath, and was taken down from his cell on the third floor to the bathroom on the ground floor, where he was left alone. After a consider- able time a warder opened the bathroom, which was found empty. He at once gave the alarm, but not a trace of Ehrhardt could be found. All measures have been taken by the authorities to recapture the fugitive.
Good, Sound English Doctrine.
"John Stuart Mill, in his famous essay on Liberty, declares that Eccentricity has always abounded when and where strength of cha- racter has abounded and the amount of eccentricity in a society has generally been proportional to the amount of genius, moral vigour, and moral courage which it con-: tained. That so few now dare to be eccentric marks the chief dan- ger of the time. This is good, sound English_doctrine," writes Dean Inge, in the Evening Standard. A country is not really free in which nobody dares to be unlike other people. This kind of liberty is worth much more than the possession of one-twenty- thousandth part of a vote in the national palaver at Westminster, So we have always thought; it has been our principle to leave our neighbours alone, so long as they do not tread on our toes." The Farm Cat.
The farm cat is a great inprove nicut on the domesticated article, its chief claim to superiority lying in the loss of that smugness which some people find so displeasing in Thomas when the hearth is his adopted home. Our five farm cats Fare certainly not smug,
for their lives are as varied in comparison with the life of
TOWN cat 35 the town dweller's interests are compared to the villager's, says "A Country- wonian in The Star. All the farm buildings and the fields around are theirs to explore, and it is quite usual to see Gustus or The Perfect Lady" rabbiting half a mile from the house. They foregather for their food to the minute each evening, and then scatter to the rat-infested spots for the night. They certainly earn their keep, for since their arrival the hordes of rats and mice, which did many pounds worth of damage during the year, have almost disappeared. Although they regard the house as a forbidden land, the five cats-all black and white and known as the Friesian herd-are as friendly to us humans as the dogs are. They accompany us in a body guard when we stroll round the farm to see how the crops are going. Amongst the baby pigs, however, they are distinctly amusing. Each regards the other with a mingling of disgust and amusement. The little pigs gather round slowly till puss puts out an admonishing paw, whereupon Piggy gives a startled leap in the air and dashes off a few yards, to come to an amazing full stop when in full tilt, as only a baby pig can. The finale is usually a cat in full cry, chased off by a pack of thirty piglets who have: grown tired of his presence in their' quarters.
