Although the Prisoners of War Department was closed down mora than three years ago, the Post Office insists on giving it a tele- phone number. In the latest telep- hone directory appears the entry,
Prisoners of War Dept., 29, Abingdon-street., S.W. 1. Victoria 8440." The number happens to be that of the Foreign Office.
A Daily Mail reporter called at 29, Abingdon-street to see how the department was progressing,
He was met with a look of blank surprise when he asked to see the chief of the department. "The Office and was closed down three department went to the Foreign
years ago," he was told.
At the Foreign Office he was again told that the department had been dead for three years. He was also told the Foreign Office had written to the Post Office several times in each of the past three years asking that the entry might be left out of the telephone direc- tory..
At the Post Office an official who was asked to explain the mystery put on at once the splendid mask of official reticence. "No doubt the authorities here have a very good reason for letting the reamin," he said.
