ARRIVALS.

BY AIRSHIP TO THE EAST:

HOW PROPOSED SERVICE WOULD BE RUN.

to

The last moment attempt in March of last year to save the Brit- ish airships from destruction occasioned much interest, and there was speculation as to the reply of the Government to the offer of a strong financial syndicate that included Messrs. Vickers, Limited, and the Shell Oil group, which was prepared cstab- lish a four million pounds company if the Government, in addition to handing over the | airships, the material, and the | bases, granted a subsidy of £91,000, and if Australia and India each | gmnted a subsidy of £40,000. The Government is not asked to make any capital investment at all, finan- ciers, it is stated definitely, will provide all the money required for they are remarkably interested in the possibilities opened up.

CHEAPER THAN THE STEAMSHIP, Commander C. Dennis Burney, R. N., who is associated with Messrs. Vickers, is largely respon sible for the project, and he is enthusiastic over what can be done to revolutionise Empire munications.

com-

"My whole idea," he said, to a press representative "has been to put the matter before the public in such a form that the consequences of scrapping the airships will be ap preciated before it is too late. "In the details already given the sug gestion has been made that the aii- ship fare to India will be £5 cheaper than the first-class pas- senger fare at present charged by steamship, As a matter of fact, the reduction might easily be so much lower that we should charge about £50 instead of the £85 now asked for the steamship journey. If we constricted an airship of 3,800,000 cubic feet capacity it would carry 100 passengers and about ten tons of mail and goods. The cost for each trip, including standing charges, depreciation as- surance and running expenses, would only be about £3,500, thus); allowing ample margin for a fare at £50.

SIX NEW SHIPS. "The present airships would be valuable to us, of course, but they would be in the nature of reserve vessels, useful for the commence- ment of the organisation, the train- ing of pilots, etc., and subsequent- ly for feeding the main routes. Our plan would be to construct six new airships at a cost very con- siderably below that hitherto found practicable. They would be in every way suitable to `the new traffic, provided with sleeping cabins, restaurant, smoking-room, and even a bathroom.

THE VOYAGE PICTURED. "There is no more comfortable method of travel than by the airship, and the quickness of the journey is remarkable. Each airship on its trip to India would start from Cardingham, which is within 45 minutes of London. After dinner, at about 10 p.m., the passengers would start on their journey, and would find themselves next mor- ning at Marseilles. The airship would then proceed to Suez (about 1,800 miles,) which at only 50 miles an hour would be covered in 36 hours. Another six hours" halt would precede the run of 2400 miles to Bombay (two days) A meteorological survey that has been made during the last eighteen months show that there has not bean a day in the period unfit for airship travel in India. The survey from. India to Australia is not yet complete enough to speak so de finitely. Shall we use helium instead of hydrogen? I do not think so. For one thing if you use helium you lose ten per cent. of your lift; for another, you cannot use helium as a fuel economiser. The eventual development of helium seems to be in the form of a blanket to the hydrogen inside.

SUBSTITUTE FOR PETROL} "The safety factor in new air- ships would be very pronounced. We are quite hopeful of being able to do away with petrol and use a heavier oil; the possibilities in that E. Weber, Mr Emile Zitkowski Mrs reply has yet been received to the respect are very good indeed. No Arabi Zitkowski, Miss Zitkowali.

Marjorie offer made to the Goverment, but we nabirally anticipate careful consideration for what must be regarded as an important scheme." Apart from the fillip such a schme would give to the development of commercial airships, the military value of such a reserve has certainly
