A story of shipwreck heroism and privations is told by the Melbourne Herald in the last issues to reach England. The banquentine “Amy Turner" left an Australian port for Manila, Philip- pines, late in March. Not far from the Isle of Yap it was wrecked in a typhoon. The skipper, his young wife beside him, went down with his ship, he and she standing to- gether on the poop and refusing to get into a boat. Their last words. were to war those in the boat to keep clear of the sinking vessel, Eight of the crew went down with them.
The four others kept their boat afloat and tried to make sail for the Philippines. But the wind as often as not was against them, and they had to take long spells at the cars. The surcharge on the members of Poplar Borough Council, in re- spect of high wages paid to Council employees, has been reduced to £5,000 as the result of a recent inquiry.
