One of the minor difficulties which confront the members of the Child Labour Commission recently op pointed by the Shanghai Municipal Council is that of the difference be tweenOccidental & Oriental methods of counting ages. Very interesting information was forthcoming at a recent meeting of the Commission when medical evidence was being taken, says the N.-C. Doily News. All witnesses, of course, agree that; in the absence of any system of birth registration it is quite "im-| possible to tell the age of Chinese child workers, →
One witness, o Chinese doctor, stated that he had a method - of securing the proper information which invariably bore good fruit. At an unexpected juncture in the course of the interview he mps out the question seking the child's nickname." Every Chinese child hse a "nickname" which depende on the year in which he or she is born. For these nicknames there are a dozen charactors only, there being five periods of 19 years each in the Chinese cycle of 60 years. These chamcters represent animals, viz., rat, rabbit, tigor, dragon, monkey, rig, etc., and the Chinese child, taken unawares, will prompt- ly give the desired information. It is obvions of course that a mistake of 12 years cannot be made in the case of children. If the dragon re- presents the eighth year of the cycle. then a child born in that year in either 13, 25 or 37 years old or hei is 4. 10. 28 or 10. - In the absence; of birth registration the system- which has come down through the | cantaries—it is believed to be about: 8,000 years old-is, like other cus toms Chinese, an admirable one.
