FRENCH BANK CHARGES.
IMPRUDENCE ADMITTED.
PARIS, July 20 Defending Counsel in the Banque Industrielle hearing submitted that the directors of the Banque might have been blameable for imprudence, notably in not establishing sufficient reserves, but they had not been guilty of misdemeanour. They had not acted in bad faith. Counsel declared that the pro- secution sought to establish a rigid standard which was contrary to the practice of all banking estab lishments in the Far East.

The new company Is subject to all Turkish taxation and must also pay thirty per cent profits to the Government. The Oxford University, in convocation, has con ferred its honorary doctorats of letters on "Lord. Chalmers and Sir Charles Eliot in connection with the centenary of the Royal Asiatic Society.
[Lord Chalmers was president of the Royal Asiutto Society i 1922 and Governor of Ceylon from 1913 to 1916. He is the author of numerous publications. Sir Charles Eliot is well-known local- ly as the first Vice-Chancellor of the Hongkong University, which post be resigned to become British Ambassador at Tokyo Credited with a knowledge of 22 languages, Sir Charles is also the author of mumerous books and papers on diversified subjects. He has had a distinguished' diplomatic career in various parts of the world]

The Appeal Court-has allowed the appeal of Dr. Marie Stopes with costs against the Judgment entered against her for £100 with half taxed costs.
Dr. Marie Stopes sued "Dr.
Salliday, Sutherland 4 London physician, “and publisher, Harding More, for alleged libel in Dr. Sutherland's book "Birth Control," which, referring to her birth control clinic in London, expressed surprise that the Home Secretary tole- rated a monstrous campaign of experimenting on the poor," and declared the tCharles Bradlaugh had been imprisoned for a less serious crime. The Jury found the words defamatory, but true in substance and fact, though not falt comment, and awarded a hundred pounds sterling damages. The Lord Chief Justice, after hearing the legal arguments, said that as the jury had found the words true in substance and fact it was impossible for him to depart from the ordinary rule; therefore he gave hudgment for the defendants, with costs, but granted a stay of execution in view of an appeal His Lordship sald that nobody denied the ability and sincerity and i honesty of purpose of the plaintiff, but there was no evidence of will, on the part of the defen dants.]
