A great step forward in submarine salvage was successfully demonstrated off Long Island when the Coast Guard cutter "Scally," which had been converted from a 500-ton Eagle boat, was raised from a depth of 60 feet by means of compressed-air pontoons. A submarine tractor was lowered alongside the 200-foot vessol, and holes were drilled in the hull. Then tanks, filled with water, were attached. The water was blown out by compressed air and the vessel easily lifted to the surface.
