DEATH OF A GRAND DUCHESS.
The Grand Duchess Luise of Baden died at Baden-Bade 1, aged
84.
In spite of the revolution, the people of Baden called her "our grand duchess" to the end. She was taught her place as a small child by being placed in the mid- dle of a circle of chairs, each of which, she was told, represented a person-a general, a lady of the Court, a servant, a member of a deputation, and so forth. She then had to address an appropriate gracious remark to each chair.
The death of Ernest, last reign- Ing Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar, is also announced. He was 44.
Was
The oldest member of European royalty, the Grand Duchess was also one of the most picturesque Agures in Germany. She lived after the death of her husband in 1907 alone in the castle of fan-shaped Baden-Baden, where she guarded by 40 giant footmen in gorgeous livery. She had her Ministers and her Court and was a queen in everything but name. In her carriage she was constantly visiting hospitals and schools. The crowds would gather to see her in her Margravine-shaped bonnet get out of the carriage on the arm of one of the 40 gigantic footmen, and show their affection and respect.
The Prince of Wales visited her just before the war and looked surprised, she said afterwards, when she told him that as a child she had roaped with his grand- father, King Edward.
She was the daughter of the German Emperor, Will elm I, and mother of the Queen of Sweden.
WORLD'S RECORD.
BELL-RINGING FOR 9 HOURS.
Locked in a belfry tower, with out food or drink, 12 Londoners rang heavy church bells for 9 hours, 48 minutes, without stopping, at St. Saviour's Cathedral, Southwark, S.E, yesterday says the Daily Mail. They rang 12,675 different chonges of 12 bells, and so achieved their object of beating the world's record held by Birmingham ringers, who rang III changes in Decem- ber 1901. The feat was car ried out by members of the An- cient Society of College Youths -the
society of bellringers founded in the 17th century, The bells, which are 200 years old, weigh 1 tons in all, the tenor bell weighing 232 tons.
Some of the ringers wore housé slippers, and they rang in their shirt sleeves. The oldest, Mr. Challis Winney, is 65, and the youngest Mr. W. Rushton, 17. Several of them had blistered bands.
"I would do it again tomorrow if necessary," said Mr. A. B. Peck, who rang the 2-tons bell. "We.. are enthusiasts."
Mr. Herbert Langdon, the con ductor, said afterwards: "We were locked in because if we have our attention distracted we might make a mistake. Nobody had anything to eat or drink during the whole. time."
It was 'stated that never before have so large a number of changes been rung on such a weight of metal.
While the peal was being rung Mr. Albert Hughes, of the firm which keeps the bells in order, went up among them five times to oll them
Toring all the changes possible with 12 bells would take 37 years. of continuous ringing.
