Above is a "spirit" photograph made by Rev. Father de Heredia, to support his charge that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is showing "fake" ectoplasmic pictures. The "spirits" manifesting themselves in the pictures taken of Father Heredia and a group of his friends are the result of a simple trick in handling the negative. Father Heredia also shows an ectoplasmic effect, obtained by a trick. In the hollow of a woman's conib, or in a celluloid finger, gauze is concealed and withdrawn when the room is darkened for exposure to the

camera.
