Burma's Loneliness

Genius is a lonely thing. Nature jakes pains to raise barriers between the immortals of the race and their fellow-men; and Robert Burns paid the full price for his, social madness," his, heights of vision, his light from heaven," That "social madness "besmirched him; that light from heaven led him astray, and the heights of vision were sometimes hidden be hind thun Barclouds of remorse, of despair, of ultimate doom. Yet, the. Yet I can think of four men; so that Robert Burus is to two-lige English epigrams which, day—more than a century after his each in its own way, is as fine as death not only the national bard the ancient models. MAN'S ANCESTORS.

ORANG-UTAN AND GIBBON.

REPTILE. AGE HORROR.

There is not a little that will starile the public in Professor Hur mar Klatsch's "Evolution and Progress of Mankind." The author died in 1916i but his work lurs been completed and brought.completely up to date by another German an- thropologist, Professor Heilborn. The translation is by Mr. Joseph McCabe. The main paint which the

· Book makes is that it postulates a plural origin for mau. The Aurig- nat (or higher types prehistoric mac), Khaatsch believed, had come from Asia, and his skeleton showed affinities with the gorilla.

This was not to say that man was descended either from an orang or a baboon:

The Neanderthal (or lower type prehistoric man) in the same way had, he thought, come from Africa, and his skeleton showed affinities with the gorilla.

Man and the anthropoid apes have risen from a level of brain that was common to their ancestors and those of the ordinary monkeys. The nearest living representative of the primitive common level are the gibbons, small man-like apes of the Indo-Asiatic islands. They are in their organisation not far from the starting point from which man and the manlike apes diverged in their several directions.

The home of the commonasn cestor was possibly a continent in the Indian Ocean which ha- foundered.

"SUPERIOR" SAVAGES. To recover the characteristics of prehistoric man, Khalsch made a very careful study of the Australian Datives, and some of his most interesting pages deal with them. Ho gives a kindly verdict regardi ing them;

That 'savage gentleman" the Australian aboriginal shows ns by his natural pride that primitive.man was quite a superior person, aking in his own domein. In spite of his "savagery" there is nothing low or bestial about him.

He connects the Australians' dislike of reptiles with an instinct of horror which the reptile age developed in mankind; and ho gives an illustration of the thigh of the gigantosaurus, which sug- gests that this beast was a more terrible creature than even the brontosaurus itself.

of

The long struggle of mammals and reptiles is not known to us in detail, he says, but we have evidente enough that there was a fearful struggle. That man as such can have had any knowledge of the gigantic monsters of the Secondary Era, remains which have been found in America

East Africa of and enormous proportions, is quite out. of the question. But the ancient struggle has left such deep scars tlut effects of them have come down from pre-kuman ages right into civilisation.

This work gives a vivid and modern account of anthropology ahd of man's development; it is written in a must interesting style. for the general reader and is well illustrated, though some of the photographs are poor.. It can be strongly recommended, says the Daily Mail.
