VICTORIA. REGATTA.

ROYALS LOSE FLAG.

SOME KEEN CONTESTS.

Fine weather, smooth water, keen contests and a holiday crowd are essential to the success of a Regatta. All these elements were the present yesterday when fifty-third regatta, under the auspices of the Victoria Recreation Club, was concluded.

Just before noon, the launch "Stanley" arrived with H.E. the .Governor (Sir Reginald Stubbs, K.C.M.G.), the G.O.C., (Sir John Fowler, K.CM.G., C.B., D.S.O.), the Chief Justice (Sir William Rees Davies, K.C.), Commander C. W. Beckwith and a party of ladies on

board.

The prizes for the Inter Club Senfor Pairs had kindly been pre- sented by the Governor while those for the next event, Brown's Challenge Cup.open to Garrison six-cared gigs, were donated by Sir John Fowler. The donors were present during the decisio of these two events, after which the party returned to Hongkong.

SA

The arrangements yesterday were far more satisfactory than the previous day. The starting marks had all been white- washed, there was a gun on the Judges' Jaunch that the winning crews knew whe to relax their efforts, and there was little delay between events: The Inter-Club Junior Pairs fel! through owing to the. Royals not putting in an appearance. In place of this there was a raço for Junior | Pairs for which three crews turned |

At itors refusing to comply with the the half-mile post the order was starter's orders, one of the rowers the same, with the Royals out of so far forgetting himself as to the race. A dingdong race ensued, swear at Mr. Carpenter.

Dreyer getting up in time to win by 4 of a length.

The dinghy race, the sixthevent, and the Scratch Fours (which rang down the curtain) were productive ́of much amusement owing to the wild steering of the fair coxswains. From yesterday's exhibition, resul- ting in damage to one of the four- cared boats, it would be prudent to eliminate these events on future occasions unless the coxswains are fitted to handle the tiller ropes. The V. R.. C. won, all the Inter- Club events. For the first time in the history of the Royal Hongkonų: Yacht Club its rowing captain has had to hand over the Club Flag. This happened yesterday when the V.R.C. won the Chater Challenge Cup.

At the conclusion of the day's racing Mr. W. Logan, the Chairma of the Regatta, before introducing Mr. D. K. Blair (who distributed the prizes), paid tribute to those re- sponsible for the success of the

fixture.

He mentioned especially the names of Capt. Newby (Tran- sport Officer). Capt. O'Farrell (Clerk of the: Course), Mr. E. T. Crocker, Competitors' Steward and last but not least Mr. E. W. Car- penter, the starter, whose handling of the crews was so noteworthy especially on Saturday when the water was rough. Mr. Logan paid tribute to the donors of prizes, to those furnishing launches and to Mr. Dalziel for so kindly lending his yacht, the "Plover," as flag-ship for the occasion.

Before presenting the prizes, Mr. D. K. Blair, Vice-Commodore of the R.H.KY.C., related part of a. conversatione had had with Mr. Findlay Smith, yesterday morni 1g. Mr. Smith was an official at a V.R.C.

DR. JACK."

NEW HAROLD LLOYD COMEDY.

Appearing in the title role as a young doctor who cures all ills by sunshine method" Harold Lloyd is giving great delight to Coronet audiences in Dr. Jack" which is being softened all this week. The comedy is interwoven with a charming love story and in the many tender passages with the heroine (who, is of course, none other, than Mildred Davis) the beggogled comedian, reveals him- self as one of the greatest lovers of the screen as well as filmdom's most successful maker of fun. Lloyd is one of the most consistent and dependable of comedians and in "Dr. Jack" he has produced a comedy which, nobody can afford to miss..
