BUSINESS FAILURES.

BANKRUPTCY PETITIONS

HEARD.

Four bankruptcy petitions were heard before the Chief Justice (Slr William Recs Davies) at the Supreme Court this morning.

In the first case. Chan Yiu Chan made an application for his dis- charge from bankruptcy. He stated that formerly he had

timber, business which he carried on by the firm name of Wing Shing Cheong but in 1916 he sustained heavy losses due to speculation. A petition was filed against him in 1916 and he was later adjudicated bankrupt in the same year. His creditors had met together again and agreed to accept a further 10% in order to allow his discharge. His Honour granted the application.

A receiving order was granted the Tung Hang Yue firm on the creditor's petition. The assets of the firm were estimated to be round about $30,000.

A receiving order was also made against the Sun Cheong firm whose liabilities were estimated to be about $2,000, with a fair amount of assets.

The fourth petition was against the Ming Sang Bank, the managing partner's name being given as Tse Yam Chi, The Official Receiver (Mr. G. N. Orme) intimated that the bankruptcy of the Ming Sang Bank was on a considerable scale. The liabilities were very large and the assets, he was informed, turned out to be worth very little or nothing. There were

several claims against the bank, he said.

This case was adjourned till next bankruptcy day.

CHINA SPECIE BANK.

ENOUGH TO PAY CREDITORS.

At the Supreme Court yesterday morning, a meeting of the creditors of the China-Specie Bank was held. It will be recalled that the bank suffered many vicissitudes and since a winding up order was made, negotiations have been proceeding: whereby the bank should make an effort to meet its liabilities.

The official receiver, (Mr. G. N. Omme) conducted yesterday's proceedings and stated that the total liabilities of the Bank, as declared by the Balance Sheet, amounted to $1,623,000 including $588,300 capital. The assets ac- cording to the books were $1,369,- 000 but Mr. J. H. Seth who had taken over the management since the winding up said that the value of the assets realisable was pro- bably a good deal less. He estim-1 ated them to be worth about $1,100,000 only. There would, in all probability be enough to pay the creditors but the shareholders would lose their money,

Mr. Orme then suggested that the meeting be adjourned till April 19 when creditors would be afford- ed an opportunity of putting for ward any suggestions. This was agreed to.
