TUBE-TRAIN PERIL.
A GUARD'S NEGLIGENCE.
An inquest was held at West minster
G. 13IT Ernest Ferguson, 50, bookmaker, of Blondin-street, Bow, E., who was crushed to death at Charing Cross Station, Bakerlon Railway, through being carried into the tunnel while alighting from a moving train.
Horace. William Riley, the front guard in the train, admitted that he started the train without first see ing that all the gates and doors were closed and locked or looking for the green light indicator that all the doors were, closed.
Mr. Ingleby Odie, the coroner, returned a verdict that Ferguson's death was due to the negligence of Guard Riley. It was not criminal- negligence and sufficiently gruss or culpable as to sustain a charge of manslaughter, although it was sufficiently serious to justify an action for damages, ·
Mr. Oddie said some device should be adopted to prevent the front guard from giving thestarting signal until the front side door was closed and locked. If such a device. could not be adopted in practice he thought it desirable that there should be no unattended front side doors ahead of the guard or that such doors should be put out, of: use and abolished.
