TEN COMMANDMENTS.

CHURCHMEN'S CONFLICT

OF VIEWS.

The changes in the Prayer Book proposed by the revision committee of the National Assembly of the Church of England continue to ex- cito keen controversy.

The principal dunges are the cutting down of certain the Com- mandments, changes in the Corn- munion office, the allowing of our- tain vestiments, and changes in the Marriage Service.

The final word on the "changes will not be spoken by the House of Bishaps, one of the three Houses which make up the Assembly, until probably next autumn, but tho first reading of the measure evolvad by the revision committes promises to produce a stiff fight.

A minority report filed at the same time as the committee, made its findings contained many objec- tions from High and Low Church- ven and those occupying a middle position in unatters of doctrine.

The opposition in the Assembly's debates on the measure embodying the report of the Revision Com mittee will be led by Mr. Athelstanı Riley, hitself a High Churchman. who presented the minority report. "We contend,” said B. Riley, to a Daily Mail, reporter recently. "that the report perpétuntes and accentuates a condition of liturgical chaos which has existed since" tla, time of Queen Elizabeth.

LORD HUUM CECIL. ·

The position of the sponsors of: the proposed changes was outlined at the request of The Daily Mail,! by Lord Hugh Cecil, one of the members of the House of Laity in cbarga of the new measure in that House. Lord Hugh emphasised the fact that the measure is per missive.

**Nobody,' he pointed out, need use the proposed abbreviated form of the Commandments unless he wishes. The proposed changes are optional, and the new forms can be-used-in-any-part-of any of the offices in conjunction with the existing, forms. The committee had to meet the views of many parties and has done its best to steer

middle course.

Dr. Wace, the Dean of Canter- bury, told a Daily Mail reporter that he protested strongly against any plans which involved an altera- The use tion in the Prayer Book. of two Prayer Books would be dis turbing enough in the ordinary prayers; in the case of the Holy Communion it would be,disastrous. would tend to make this practice a necessary preliminary-a-gate-to the Communion, thereby putting the key to the altar of God" in the hands of the priest. He believed that the great mass of English laity, felt that that was a power they would never consent to give the | clergy.
