LATE MR. H. M. BANDMAN.
LONDON, February 28. The affairs of Mr. H. M. Band- man; the well-known theatrical ím- presario of the East, were mention- ed in the Marylebone County Court, when bis widow was sued by White-1
position.
The death is announced of Lord Wear-ey's for about 60 for gonia sold, dale.
The question was whether she left Lord Weardale, lat Baron (Cr. 1906) sufficient money after Mr. Band- of Stanhope, Co. Durham, was Trustee of National Portrait Gallery: President man's death, having regard to his of Inter-Parliamentary Union,

TOLL OF BEACHY HEAD.
RETIREMENT OF CHIEF RESCUER.
An interesting link with Beachy Head has been broken by the depar- ture of Chief Officer Henry G. Mayne from the Coastguard Sta- tion.
His retiroment is rendered necessary by the Geddes Ase scheme.
Chief Officer Mayne has a recond of thirty-five years' service, and during his five years at Beachy Head he bes witnessed many human dramas.
It is no part of the Beachy Hend consigands duty to rescue people from the cliffs, which at this point are nearly 600ft. high, or to recover bodies, yet during Chief Officer Mayne's service there no fewer than fifteen rescues have been carried out by him and his men and the bodies of nine suicides recovered.
For his organising capacity in connection with this gallant work Chief Officer Mayne is received acknowledgment from the Admiral- ty, and several of the coastguards. nun have been presented with Royal Humane Society medale,
Mr. Mayne joined the Navy at 15 and saw ten years' active ser vice. Ho retires with the, mnk of lieutenant;
SECRET SERVICE AGENTS
SUCCESSFUL SEARCH FOR STOLEN BONDS,
The mysterious return to the owners of £75,00 in stolen securi- ties reveals the existence of a new weapon against the criminal.
This is the Insurance AsseBBOTS" Intelligence Bureau, an organisa fion of private detectives which has just come afresh into limelight in connection with the recovery of Rumanian Bonds. Messrs. John W. Bell & Co., insurance assessors, of Queen Victorio-street, London, have achieved a remarkable triumph in tracing these bouds by means of their secret service. The secret agents comprise men and women, all possessed with the spirit of adventure. Some have private in comes and play the role of the anderworld. Thus many "lips" of valuable information are secured.
Most of the big hauls are made by foreign crooks. They operate in small syndicatea of six or eight- some specialise in hotel robberies, Fons in mail hag thefts. The mons tor gange: have made 'big hauta in the past, but fow, without ultimate detection
Un New Year's Eve, 1920, how. over, thov got completely away with a £40,000 necklace from the Savoy Hotel and although the Bureau | searched Britain and the Centinent high and low, no traes of the thieves was ever found,

DANGEROUS DRUGS TRAFFIC.
Losos, February 28.
The House of Conimons passed the second reading of the Danger- ous Drugs and Poisons Bill, giving the authorities increased powers for dealing with illicit traffic in drugs and increasing the penalties to a maximum of ten years' penal'ser- vitude and a fiue of £1,000.
OTTAWA, February 28. Government statistics show that there are 9.500 drug addicte in Ganada, of whom 7,300 are in the "wet" Provinces of Quebec and British Columbia. It is pointed
out that Montreal and Vancouver seaports are the headquarters of the traffic, which is in the hands of the Chinese, of whom 35. have been deported.
