MR. BONAR LAW'S SPEECH.
SOME FRENCH- COMMENTS.
PARIS, February 1 Commenting on Mr. Bagar Law's speech tha sawa- papers dedars that the statement that France did not wish to see Germany strong enough to pay the par stions is the reverse of the truth. On the contrary France does not wish to see Germany become strong. enough to refuse pay. While the cordiality of Mr. Bonar Lar's tone towards France is appreciated it is re- grotted that he failed accurately to appreciate Emide situation. It is asserted that the German recalcitranty is encouraged by British nentiality and urged that Brit ish co-operation with the French and Belgians would end the German resistance. Alternatively it is suggest od that Britain might persuade Garmany to accept fait assempli and so enable the dacussion of a final

FRENCH AMBASSADORS ADDRESS.
LONDON, February 14 The French ambassador, addressing the Birpalogham Chamber of Commerce, asked what would be the affect if France who was Britain's most important customer was crushed by the burden of the debt incurred intly to repel German aggression and secondly to restore the devastated territory. France had received practically nothing from Genasny sad on the contrary had advance ed Gezmery over a hundred thousand million francs. It was an incredible and scandalous paradox that France. was obliged to become banker for the aggressor whose productive power was retained intact. Britain, gould have acted more firmly and more quickly.

In the House of Commons a joint Asquithian National Liberal amendment to the address from the throne will be moved by Mr. H. A. L. Visher and will, it is expected, be supported by Sir John Simon and Mr. Lloyd George. It declares that inasmuch as the future peace of Europe cannot be safeguarded nor the recovery- of reparations be promoted by Franco Belgian operations in the Ruhr, it is urgently necessary to seek effective securities against aggresdon by international guarantees of his bodyguard of picked Egyptian troops as a guard under the League of Nations and to invite the Council of honour.?
The work of clearing the outer chamber has been- of the League without delay to appoint a commission of experts to report on the capacity of Germany to pay respeeded up, the treasures brought out faslading parations and the best method of effecting such payments elaborately decorated chariots, a lion-headed couch, and that in view of reemt indications of the williignees tats robes, horus birds and strange heraldic animals in of the Government of the United States to participate bizarre and artistic designs. in a conference in this regard the British representative on the Council of the League to appoint an expert to sit on the Commission, a
FRENCH GETTING STRICTER.
LONDON, February 14, -News from the Roar indicates the increasing strict- ness of the French. A strong French force entered Gelsenkirchen and demanded the entiender of six police. men involved in an affray. Several others were arrested. owing to their attitude while the detachment was passing with the prisoners.
