A DOCTOR'S WARNING.
Remarkable references to "senst- tional operating and to commer cialism in medicine were made by the retiring president of the Queens- land branch of the B.M.A., in his retiring address, as reported in the. official organ of the B.M.A.
There was a decided spirit of commercialism abroad, he declared, and it was tending to spread. It was not in accord with the best principles that men should practice medicine with the single object of amassing wealth. Why was it that the public would pay for a proper scientific investigation of their com- plaints foe which was absurdly small in comparison with what they expected to give for operative mea- aures? The answer was not to the credit of the doctors. They had not insisted sufficiently upon the great importance of diagnosis. The result was that scientific investiga tors were few in number compared with general practitioners and sur. geons.
It was possible for a man with a clover pair of hands and a freedom from scruples to make a lot of money, and, incidentally, to do n lot of harm before the public awakened to the fact that surgery consisted of a great deal more than sensational operating,
Disproportion in the fees was largely to blame for the success of the unscrupulous practitioner.
Apparently the remedy would only come from team work... Tt was abanril that a singeon should pocket a large fee for an operation. while the clinical worker, laborstory worker, and radiologist, who had assisted so greatly in making no necomata diagnosis, should be given A pittance in comparison.
