MISTAKES IN SURGERY.
CULPRITS REMARKABLE
ADMISSIONS.
"A celebrated surgeon ore re- 'moved a man's sound leg, and, on discovering his mistake, wished to sinputate the other, which was badly injured, but the patient objected, and eventually left the hospital with his remaining leg complutely healed." This is one of the most amazing mistakes, at least! to lay readers, related by Colonel Harald Burrows, Consulting Sur- goon, Poristasuth, in his book, Mis- takes and Accidents of Surgery, the title of which completely explains the nature of its contents.
Colonel Burrows explains that the mistakes related are other fel- Lows," but the book is the result of orrowful contemplation of many ho himself bas committed.
Relating the leg amputation pisode, he cheerily adds that the same mistake will probably be made again, and he explains that even commoner is the case of the removal of the wrong fuger, unless the surgeon keeps himself wide awake.' Naturally the operating theatre is the scene of the most disturbing events, and apparently, it is not un- common to leave: swabs or wads of cotton, wool or bandages in the patient's interior.
Colonel Burrows relates that be once discovered, a swab inside a patiens, and on the latter's continu- ing illness he mude another explora- tion, discovering a recond swab by X-rays. Another case disclosed two rubber tubes in the patient's chest.
Other mistakes mentioned are the squirting of neat chloroform in bulk into a patient's mouth, the ad- eninistration for half-an-bour of pure oxygen, instead of nitrous oxide gas, and diagnosing head in- juries as drunkenness.
Twenty-six diferent diseases have been mistaken for appendicitis, and consequently have been improperly treated. The writer cites a case whore na anusthetic was adminis tered to a patient not suffering from appendicitis but from a malady which the samsthetic rendered fatal. Sprains have frequently been
mistaken for fractures.
Colonel Burrows declares that the Dominoner the malady the greater are the mistakes owing to the little ill demanded inducing careless- nes Operations, on tonsils and adenoids are frequently open to the gravest abusée.
