NEW SCIENCE AND ART

·JOURNAL.

THE CHINA MAIL.

Explaining that it seeks to further scientific research in Chics and encourage the study of that country's literature and arte, a banghai periodical called The Chin: Journal of Science and Arts has made its first appearance. The Editors, Mr. Arthur de C. Sowerby (Science) and Mr. John C. Ferguson, Ph. D. (Literature and Arts), make it clear in the preface that the new joutual will, besides catering for the learned, have a distinct populat appeal.

"Lesi the reader arould lock askance

the word at

* science' in the title of this journal, it may be explained that it is cur intention always to have come articles and papers of a less kravy nature, such as will appeal to the casual reader.... At the bame time, we do not intend to lose sight of the original purpose of the journal, and so spaca will always be found for purely technical papers. (The Shanghai Chemical Society, for one, has already appointed the journal its official organ.)

With the publication of this journal, progress is also being made with the formation of society to be called "The China Society of Science and Arta," whose aims will be identical with those of the periodical, 118 official organ. Original remenich workers in China will therefore bave a society to bring them closet together and a journal to publish the results of their work. Thus will interest bei atimulated among Europeans and

Chinese alike in the rich store of literature and art that the country: has to offer," and the study generally popularized of both the sciences and the arts.

on

The first number of the The China | Journal of Sciences and Artsets a high standard. It is well printed and the paper is good. The illustra tions, too, are excellent. Covering

the one hundred pages,: over

include informative contenta articles

the Chiaree ad-

ideas scapists; Chinese

of garden, collecting Chinese porcelain, biological fesearch; and scriculture; aleo biological, geological, and educa tional notes. The journal represents remarkable value for $2, and on its own merita should bring quick re- sponse to the Editors' appeal to ali who are interested in the sciences and the arts, to educationalists and to students to support a periodical "dealing with matters mainly of in- tellectual-interest."
