"STORY OF THE "QUEST."
FARTHER SOUTH THAN ANY
BEFORE.
Commander Frank. Wild: told the imperishable Story of the "Quest"' to an audience gathered at the Queen's Hall. As a story it was equal to the most graphia narratives, in the history of Aretio,or Antarctic exploration, illustrated with wonder. fullautern slides and moving pictures; and the gallant sailor hold his audience enthralled for an hour and a ball or more.
Viscount Hambleden, who presided; recalled that Commander Wild bad take part in no fewer than five ex peditions to the Antarctic and carried out explorations in Spitzbergen in the Arctio, He seem to me," added the chairman, "to be typical successor to thore sailors and +x- plorers who have done so much for the cause of science at the risk of their own lives."

Commander Wild recalled how Bir Ernest Shackleton set about bist project for an expedition to the Antarctic and Sub Antarctic with the generous help of Mr. J. Quiller Rowett. Das. pite all difficulties, Sir Ercest Sbackle- On preserved his unconquerable spirit. His tiny cabin was to flooded and damaged that he could not sleep in it. But he would not take the cabin of any of his crew and comrades,” He slept on a plonk in the ward room. This ie not the moment," said Cem- mander Wild, "to speak of Shackle- ton's death, which was a tragic less to ue. His plans were known to me, and I know that if he had been able to say anything at all he would have caid, 'Carry on!' This we did."
The Quest behaved very well, continued Commander Wild, but the ice was no dense and the storms we cncountered in our search for Ross': Appearance of Land so severe, that no ship that ever was in the Arctic or Antarctic could have got through it. Some of the pictures illustrated this world of ice where the Quest met, with one of her worst storms. This storm lasted forty-eight hours. During this time Bir Ernest Shackleton was on the bridge for sixteen to eighteen hours, at a stretch. The gale was blowing over ninety miles an hour, and it was impossible to breathe with ons's head out of shelter. On the morning of Jan. 4 South Georgia was sighted. The following day they in- tended to keep Christmas, Shackleton landed to invite the Governor and bis staff to join them, and returned very cheerful, making arrangemente for the meals they were going to have.
