BRITISH PROPOSALS IMPOSSIBLE
M. Poincare replied that the French Gavaromat had examined most attentively. the British proposaly and the longer toy studied them the more they wer bbliged to recognise that the propisale would favalve s considerable reduction of the debts owing to Brande and coerthrow the Treaty of Versailles and it was impossible tp accept anch a station. The Government of the Republic deeply regret inability to agree with Great Britain, on this serious question but thanks the British Governm.at for its felen lly statement and assures them aptwithstanding the differezes of opinion that sentimenta of the French Government and nation towards England remain nucbangingly cordial.
The New York World says that if Mr. Hughes mcaza busitess be must prepare to act quickly and dat with the realities of the problem, namely guarantees, before France commits herself to a policy of independent action against Germany.
The New York Times states that the British plan is impractical and rests porely upon economic considera tions which at pre-nt are only a minor part of the question.
BELGIANS AND ITALIANS HOPEFUL.
PARIS, January 4. While the British and French dolegates this morning were firmly adhering to their respective programmai the Belgians and Italians were still hopeful that a com- promise may be reasbid.

TWO MORE SCHEMES.
•LATER.
The conference this afternoon will probably be con fronted with two schemes-the-Italian-which-appen ximates the French, and the Belgian which provides for a shorter moratorium than that suggested by the British bat supporte the French in demanding guarantees during the moratorium A noteworthy development to-day was the departure at two in the afternoon of s special messenger with urgent despatches from Mt. Bonar Lw to London in a French military aeroplane.
ULTIMATUM FROM POINCARE.
LATER.
The conference reassembled at three in the after. noon and was interrupted at 4.20 to enable the delegates to examine Mr. Bouar Law's detailed reply to M. Poincare. Reuler learns that prior to the interruption, M. Pincare delivered something in the nature of an ultimatum, declaring that it was useless to continue to talk unless guarantors or sanctions were accepted. It is understood that the British delagates will leave Patis in the evening if the Italiane also oppose the British plan.
FRENCH, BELGIANS AND ITALIANS STILL TAĻKING.

TRANSFER OF GOLD DEPOSITS:
PARIS, Janusty 4.
One of the thing, which har sugared the French most to day is the revelation that £40,000.007, in gold on behalf of Frano; and £10,000,000 on behalf of Italy deposited in the Book of England in war time has been sent to the Unit d States ( parchais war material for the Allies. The papers in Paris declare that Trarce was thus deprived of a most valuable deposit for the safeguarding of F.ench-oredit. A French-semi-official_ statement explains that the gold was depositat as s security for an advance of £150,000,000 sterling and was restorable three years after the war at the same time, at the repayment of the advance was +flected.

BONÁR LAW'S IDEA OF IT.
PARIS, January, and a
Mr. Bonar Law was unable to accept the bitinction in that form and insisted that the difference was simply whether the steps to be taken would or would not pre- vent the recovery of German credit-whether it was- ' better to seize whatever was within reach or to consid.r whether what was aciz d would prevent the recovery of German credit wherein lay the hops of obtaining a larger-sim. LATER.
On the resumption of the conference at three in the afternoon Marquis Dolls Torratta sabmitted the Italian proposals.
BRITAIN QUITE JUSTIFIED.
A financial authority is quoted in Lindon to-day as stating that the British Government, merely as a book keeping transaction pail the French interest on this; gold and this was construed as carrying a liberty to use the money as it thought fit. instead of lying idle dar ing the financial stress; It is pointed out that neither France nor Italy paid interest on their debts to Britain Official circles declare that Britain was quite justified in
Mr. Bouar Law followed, reading a detailed state ment in further reply to Franch criticisms of the British Acheme. M. Princate therr after epoka declaring that little could be gained by further discussions on the present lines. He said the French did not oppose the moratoriutu hut it must be accompanied by substantial guarantees. Mr. Bonar Law replied, adhering to the position that the her action and has a set off both an interest and capital imposition of gustanjees during the moratorium would in amounts owed by Franse and Italy. The futility is stressed of reboying gold merely to re deposit it in defeat the obj ́et in view.·.
