LOCAL SUGAR MARKET.
The fall in Java exchange has caused the rise in sugar prices to be sustained. At any rate, two of the biggest Chinese importors here, Klem Tjiang Han and Wing Yee Cheong were buying in the local market quite recently. Their action was interpreted by sugar men as though still higher prices were anticipated and specula- tors immediately followed suit. Most of the transactions were for sport goode, ie, clearance within a month and very little forward delivery, Le goods to arrive, wan clored, this being probably dae to the China New Year not being far off. However, clear- ances have not been above the aver age, the recent trapractions merely antailing a change of ownership with out the goods being shipped away.' This afternoon "Il Trovatore "aud at the evening performance" Lucia di Lammermoor are to be repeated, probably the most mustasl in the apparently inexhaustive repertoire of the Company.
Last night Verdi's “Ermani” was staged and proved but another of the many suocesses gained during the past fortnight. It was a triumph for principala, chorus, and orchestre alike. The male members of the chorus were beartily applauded for some fine, part and unison singing in the opening scenes and all through lent affective support. If the story of "Ernani" does not grip, the same cannot be said of the music. It is simply a succession of beautiful harmonies of the most melodious type. with a lilt that is irrepressible. Con- certed pieces abound and wonderful tone poams, Bin-
thor" excelled and gers over the warm tribute to the efforts of Signorina Impallomeni, and Siguora Artino, Mauceri, and Scamuzzi. The latter proved himself quite at home in tender pianissimo passages as well as the doclamatory style, which bas earned him fame, Altogether it was a magnificent performance on the part of all concerned.
