INTERESTING RACING.

J

The Jockey Club held its fifth gymkhana at Happy Valley on Satur day afternoon. The weather wa ideal but the crowd seemed smaller than usual. Perhaps this was because the members of the general public who attended found themselves coop. ed up ic a comparatively small triangle at the eastern end of the ground. At times ao 18-pounder could have been fired through the space railed off as a members' en- closure without bitting anybody. It seemed absurd and regrettable that a large grandstand capable of acom- modating several hundred people should have been practically empty during the whole of the afternoon and the Jockey Club ought, as a matter of decency, to relax their dog in the manger attitude at Saturday after- noon gymkanaa at any rate

There was nothing particularly out- standing about the racing on Saturday except that in oan or two of the events there wero come rather good fields which gave backers a good deal to puzzle over. Ju the first race, however, there were only five starters, and Mr. Sontes, who but a proper day out with two firsts and two seconds to his credit, brought Aloba home a bare half length ahead of the rest and secured a dividend of $110.50. Those who had put their money on His Excellency's horse were dis appointed because The Don came in third and, because of the small field, paid nothing.

After missing a place in the mile" handicap through being locked on the rails West River ridden by Zel- lensky, won the three-quarter m le in tine style and another good race was the last oue, the uile and a quarter. For the event Mosaic Tile, with Matcham up, was very much fancied. The Tile pony ran vell and appeared to be sure of a victory. Matcham, however, as it seemed to his backers, left the final spurt until it was too late and bad to be content with second place just balf a length behind Roman Coreul.

The results were as follows:- THREE QUARTER. ME RACE.-For.

ponies that have run in any race- including Polo Scurries--but never. woo. 1st prize, $250; 2nd prize, $125; 3rd prize, $75. Mr. A. W,dù Rozn’s Aloha, I4ills.
