SANTIAGO, November 12th A partial resumption of communion tions reveals the fact that the earthquake was greater than at first reported. It in estimated that at least a thousand killed by Calling houses or drowned by the tidal wave. Thouennds are hemeless and destitute,

In addition to the heavy casualties re ported from Copiapo and Coquimbo, it is stated that five hundred are dead in the Vallenar district. The lows of Valle riar was practically destroyed, and it' stems certain that beavy casualties must have resulted in the towng further south, from which no news is yet available. Tidal waves were experienced over a dis. tance of twelve hundred miles, from Antofagasta to Valdivia.

ECLIPSE TRIP TO LONELY ISLE.

The following appeared in the Daily Mail from Mr. H. Spencer Jones, Chief Assistant to the Astro nomer Royal at Greenwich, who, as leader of the British expedition, went in January to Christmas Island, Baath of Java, in the Indian Ocean, 14,700 miles there and back, to observe the eclipse of the sun on September 21 and attempt a freth test of Einstein's theory that rays of light are bent inwards as they pass the san.

The eclipse is over, but at Christmas Island no observations were secured. The weather, which we have found very trying during the past six months, ro Led us of snccess at the last minute.

The days immediately preceding the eclipsa were promising. Although there was always a cortain amount of cloud in the sky, we thought it pro- bable that we should be able to secure sufficient photographs to be of value. The programme of the observations was well rehearsed be Oforehand not to waste one valuable second during the totality of the eclipse. We were assisted by three Europeans from the settlement, so that we could concentrate entirely on exposing and changing the plates and moving the telescope. At daybreak ou the critical morning the sky was entirely covered by low cloud. At 9 o'clock it was pouring rain. Our hopes sank to zaro, but within an hour there occurred one of these meteorie changes common in the tropics. The sun was shining and the sky was one of the clearest we tave seen bere. If only the eclipse bad occurred then instead of a couple of hours later!
