ANATOLE France.
TALK TENDER, IRONICAL, POLISHED.
Sk
Mr. Frederick Lees, the translator of "Acatole France and His Circle'
(Joba Lane, 7. Gd. net), by M. Paul Geell, is to be congratulated on his easy rendering of a delightful book. These conversations, being bis table-talk collected and recorded," are full of cham and wisdom and lange over all sorts of subjects from French literature to humanitarian ideale. Every lover of Anatole racco will thank M. Grell for his faithful re creation on the master's Cids and thoughts.
When an enthusiast for Esperanto called on Anatole France to get his
consent for the translation of one of
his works into that language, he tried to assure the author of its greatness. "Ah! no," replied Anatole France, "for it was not born of suffering or jey. It has not been wailed or sung by human souls. It is a mechanism constructed by a scholar. It is not life."
That is a fair sample of his talk throughout this book, talk tender, witty, ironical, and polished. Here is another: "Laws never regulato anything. When leaders bara form- ulated a low it has long since passed int. uae. All it doce is to give validity to manners.
If it re counter to them it remains a dead letter."
This is a book that it would be easy toquote from indefinitely, but we can gire only one more example. A bishop once called on Anatole France. i "Monsieur," said the bishop in a supercilious tone, I must admit i quite plainly that I bave not rend your novele,"
