BRITAIN'S NEAR EAST STAND.
STRAITS FREEDOM VITAL.
THE SITUATION NOW IN KEMAL'S HANDS,
LONDON, September 22. Reuter's Agency has received an authoritative statement of the British attitude in the Near East. This declares that Britain is seeking nothing for herself. She is pursuing no short-sighted policy based on amour propre. Her supreme interest, no modification of which can be entertained, is neutralisation of the Straits with full guaranteesfor free navigation for all countries under the Lengue or any other effective înternational organisa- tion. All other matters are secondary and subject to peaceful accommodation between Turkey and the states more directly concerned.
REASON WILL PREVAIL.
·
While the Government is completing its naval, military and air measures to safeguard the mentrality of the Straits and covering positions, it is no way desires to precipitate bostilities. War will never come from the British side, but is only possible if the Kemalist forces attack the positions cccupied by the Allies at the armis tica and held consistently as neutral territory through. out the Graeco-Tarkish hostilities. The situation is therefore in Kemal's hands, but there is at present no reason for supposing that Kemal will choose to apply force of arms to questions which can be settled by con ference. There is no secret about the strength of the Turkish forces and no weight is attacked to exaggerated alarmist estimates of what ebs can put in the field.

M. Hanotaux (France) and Signor Imperiali (Italy) supported Mr. Fisher's proposal,
