ST. JAMES'S-STREET ANECDOTES.

WHEN BATHS WERE DEAR.

TROUSERS EXTRAORDINARY,

In "Memorials of St. James's St., together with the Annals of Almack's" (Grant Richarde. 15. net), Mr. Beresford Chancellor has given an agreeable anecdotal bistory of ose of the most famous streets in the world, the hub of social London, with several well-chosen illustrations.

Among them is a most interesting elevation of the east and west sides of the street as they existed about 1835, with the numbers and names above. From this it can be seen that 80 years later quite a number of the old build- ings and firms still survive.

Some of these firms have made history. Banting'a, for example, gave the language the word "banting." A former head of the business, William' Banting:-
