EVOLUTION OF BIRDS.

TRACED BACK TO REPTILES.

Evolutionists believe that mon arote from the basic stock that pro- duced the apes. The ancestry of birds (writes Lee S. Crandlalt, Curator of Birds at New York Zoological Park in the Nw York Herald) can be re- traced still further to none other thon the lowly reptile. Fossil birds, to

which we must look for our evidenco. are almost as ararce as fossil men.

In spite of their relative scarcity, and the miracle of chance by which they must be found a few bird fossila are known. From the Cretaceous rocks of western Kansas, the age of which is believed to be from six to seven million years, we have two ancient creatures, obviously birds, pet undeniably of reptilian affinities.

Hesperorui, on the other hand, won a highly specialised ecuatie species, which depended Ita strong lega for its test ve power, the wings being reduced to mere vestiges. Yet these two birds. ! even nt that remote time to well adapted to their respective environ- ments and so divergent in character, had reptilian jaws. plentifully equipped with strong, efficient teeth?

INTERMEDIATE FORM.

Bot from the Jurassic period, several mullions of years earlier, we have two fonsils that rest at the foundation of every evolutionist's Jelief. This creature, known as Archeopteryx, was so perfectly inter- mediate between reptiles and birds as to leave little to be desired. Tret Hard Lead Lnd jaws well armed with teeth; the tail was perfectly reptilian.

upt the from each component Lond sprang feather at each elde:: its well developed wings must have, teen capable of at least some powers < flight, but three Gugers of the fore Jmh, instead of being encased in ekip, wore free and each was armed with a strong lizard's claw,

Feathers are the insignia of the bird, Teeth have disappeared entirely end jawa now form more or less horny heak. Faint traces of teeth are believed to be traceable in the jw of baby terns, and it is possible that further examination of bind erabryos may reveal better evidence. But no adult bid is known to dry in which tech still exist.

EVIDENCE IN DOMESTIC FOWL. The bird still carries on its as the scales of the reptile, a conspicuous Badge of orgin and relationship. The tumble thicken. dress,d for rarket and Langing in rows

Lees conepicuoue but perhaps more convincing are the claws, usually rudimentary, which many bide stifl retain on their finger tips. The digits of the fore limb have ben coalesced that they have little of the appearance of those of the rept le yat they any etill be traced. In most birds only the thumb and first finger nie plainly seen. The thumb exists as the Tree joint near the bend of the wing, while the first finger is at the extreme end. In many young birds and seme adults these fingers bear unmistakable claws. In the ostriches ewus and cassowaries they are large and well developed. In the ducks and raile they are smaller but prescut never. theless. Usually these clawz are susrely leftovers and appear to have Eo useful function.

In cesta'n restricted portions of northern South America lives a bird. knows-as-the-hodizin, strange and weird as the adults may be iš is the yen ig birds that really amaze us. For to h thumb and forefioger are aimed hsharp, rocurved c'aur, letter
