The Magistrate suggested a week's remand with a view to a settlement out of Court, but Mr. Wood said that was hopeless, as they had already ried all in their power, and had brought the case to Court only after they had dispaired of arranging proper marriage owing to the atti- tude of the girl's parents.

Addressing the defendant Magistrate asid: "That you were tempted by this girl, I quite believe, but your duty was to have taken her to the police, directly she came from Canton. I quite admit it was awkward position for yan, but the law must be upheld. The maximum penalty for such an offence is two years; however, I shall take a much lesa serious view of this case from the facts placed before me.

Throe armed robbers entered the Shup Hop matshed builders' shop, No. 1, Pohingfong, at 1.38 p.m.. yesterday and riffing the safe, stole a gold ring and $40 in cash. The only person in the shop at the time was a young apprentice. He was busy in the cook house preparing the meal when a man entered. Producing a revolver, the intruder threatened to shoot the lad it he raised an slam. He then gagged the youth, and tying his band's behind his back, knocked him over and pinned him down on the kitchen floor for a quarter of an hour, In the meantime the man's confeder- ates busied themselves in the shop. Then in reply to

s signal the lad's assailant suddenly released him and bolted out of the kitchen. The youth regained his feet just in time to see the three meh running out of the shop and was powerlɩ to pavent their flight or to give chase. The shopmaster returned a few minutes later and released the boy, and a search of the shop revealed the fact that the safe had been forced open and emptied of its contents.
