OLDEST HEBREW

WRITING.

Some little brown scraps of papyrus, shown by Professor Elinders Petrie to members of the Jewish Historical Socjoly, are said to contain the oldent Hebrew writing known," apart from stone inscriptions..

Profesor Petrie, who was lecturing to the society at University College (Sir Philip Sassoon presiding) on the status of the Jews in Egypt, mid the papyri wara pot of four letters whose discovery, a few weeks ago in middle Egypt had come as a surprise. They dated from the third or fourth century, and were ordinary business letters, hike the bulk of the Greek papyri of that age. One of them ovataited an inquiry about cinnamon and salt and ‘another was written on part of a Greek document, probably of the third century. Another inter eating exbibie was a reproduction of berolyphic inscription found by the professor un a temple monument at Theber, and the only one to mention the people of Israel. He also showed a model of the Temple Hill at Jeru- alem, of which a replica was set up by the exiled Jews in Egypt under one of the Ptolemies, when they attempted to found a

The Diplomatic correspondent of the tudy Telegraph nya grave anxiety is felt in British vireits in referees to the Ger. man Ginancial crisis: A Cabinet committee is at present considering the matter which will be discussed by the fall Cabinot prob- nkly to-morrow. COTTON GROWING FOR AUSTRALIA.

Mammaruse, July 10th. Australians are just beginning to walisa the ghen possibilities of cotton pro. duction in Australia,

Lord Forster, the Giovernor-General, in n sporch said that Great Britain spent £200,000,000 yearly on raw cotton, and ho New no reason wity a hyge proportion of this should not be spent in Australia.

Australie imported £10,0cíace worth of cotton goods annually, and he saw no reason why Australia should not manu2 Factum all the cotton guts the wanted and export extensively to the East.

farsland experiments had shown that culton could be grown in every Stave_of the Commonwealth, and the quality of

Australian cotton was from 20 to 30 per

ca. better thun American, whilst the yiehl per acre in Queensland considerably exceeded the American yield. ¿.
