THE PASSING OF AN IDOL.
WELLS KNOCKED OUT BY GODDARD,
A THRILLING FIGHT,
Bombardier Billy Wells for long years the idol .of the British ring, passed out of the boxing business at the Crystal Palace on Saturday night when he was knocked out by Frank Goddard after six of the most terrific rounds ever witnessed in this or any other country (says the Daily Mail of May 29.)
His exit was not without magni- âicence. It was as is so often the case, crowded with tragedy, but the
demonstration that
accompanied
Wells into obscurity was plain proof that the spectators were not so mach affected by his defeat as by what can only be described as the splendour of his passing. Never did I see anything that so closely resembled fiction This ght, and particularly its end, as like nothing so mach as a happening torn out of the mind of a highly imaginative novelist.

The final monicate would have
it must have been palpable, even to the inexpert. that only a miracle could bring him back to his feet.
He was carted to his corner in the manner of an empty sack. Not a sound, save for a few sighs, disturbed the tense atilla Every eye was on Wells, and a gasp arose when it was observed that after being placed in
his chair he nearly slipped out of the ring.
•
Minutes passed before he was able to comprehend what had happened. Then, as Goddard, swaying from the hips like a sailor fresh from the res, swaggered across to give the cus tomary handshake, a grim smile took possession of his features. It was as fleeting as a shadow; it was chased away almost immediately by an ex
ion of resignation that was eloquent of the knowledge that had come to him that bis day was done. There was bardly a whisper of applause for the victor. There was certainly a
laugh when, in his ex- aberance, he leaped over the ropes, but the great cheer as reserved for Wells. It filled the huge building as he was assisted to the ropes. He was in the act of grasping them when someone of deep sentiment handed him a bouquet of flowers..
THUNDER FEAR.
(By a Doctor in the Daily Mail.) The setting of a thunderstorm is the most tremendous piece of saggea-
Y tion man experiences.
The tense atmosphere, the menacing sky, the awful majesty of the thundercloud, the deep, rumbling note that heralds the breaking of the storm all these in their long-drawn-out preparations have a cumulative effect on the nerves.
That effect is to unsteady them, to creato a feeling of apprehension on the mind-the most demoralising feeling the mind is capable of experiencing.
Though there may be actual fear in only a few cases, there is some degres of nerve instability in most.
The gradual denouement and pre-
paration of a thunderstorm resemble those of a Grand Guignol drama, but are infinitely more majestic,
Every bit of the prologue, even to the deathly stillness of Naturs that precedes the final outbreak, plays its part in unsteadying the nerves.
Even the birds are awed to silence; Nature holds her breath.
