COAST OFFICERS' ACTION AGAINST CHINESE

COMPANY.

INTERESTING EVIDENCE.

The action brought against the San Peb S. N. Co. by the China Coset

Officers'. Guild, which has been at- tracting much interest in thip- ping circles, was couticed at the Mixed Court, Shanghai, on June 16 afternoon before Magistrate Li and Mr. Blackburn (British Amesto).

Mr. Newman put it to witness that UNCLAIMED TELEGRAMS. the salary paid by the company and that asked for by the guild only THE GREAT NORTHERN TELE- differed by about $4.29 each per day.

Do you mean to say that they would not accept the guild rates if it were offered to them?--They would rather have a lower rate of pay than have their ships tied up altogether. At Jast year's rate they would, at any

rate.

Witness intimated that the tota

difference in wages would amount to about $36, but the company could not even afford to pay $10. His company's ships were old and the company had no capital. He told Captain Doyle that when freight went down the company would have to

reduce wages.

Counsel put it to witness that he made so such statement and, that there were no other men available at that time.

Mr. K. E. Newman conducted the cate for plaintiffs and Messre. L. K. Kentwell, M. B. Brawn and N. Y. Chang appeared for the defence.

Plaintiffs allege that defendants, with other steamship companies, on March 15, 1920, agreed to refer var ious questions at ide between them, and also to refer questions con- cerning increases in the monthly 'salaries of masters and officers of ships with crews signed on under Shirghai or Hongkong articles, to John Owen Hagbes and Nowell WitarseThere were plenty of mer, Lake Watson, arbitrators.
