WCHAN-BARGER.

WIFE AND MATE OF BARGEMASTER.

H. George Palmer, who helps her husband to navigate the good barga **John "James Clark,” would have delighted Dickans's heart.

A Daily Chronicis representative, who paid har a surprise visit recently, found her full of river reminiscences, for she has acted sa mats of the “John

James Clark" for sight years.

With the halp of a pair of powerful glasses, which are always near to her. band, she has scanned the panorama of the Thames during those sight years, and is now an 'expert on river- side lore and stories.

It was not an eary matter to board the "John James Clark” as she lay quiet in the shade of Hammersmith Bridge with a dozen other barges.

With a stride here and a leap there, across the chasms which separated the boats, Mrs. Palmer quickly improvised a way of planks and ladders for the clumsy visitor who wanted to visit her in her little cabin but did not quite see how to do it.

"...

Seated in the little one-room kome which is kitchen at one end, a china- brightened sitting room at the other, a bedroom at night, when racks are ubinged and mattresses spread, and s music salon at any hour of the day when the two gramophones are set going and the concertina is withdrawn from ita cupboard, Mrs. Palmer had plenty to any of the life on the river which she loves so well.

Unconsciously, she is an apostle of a form of Couéšarun.

"When I was quite a girl," she said, "I determined I would have some sort of an adventurous life in the open air. Perhaps you would hardly call life on a barge adventurona, but it suits me very well indeed. what you want you always get, I
