What a good business man went an enchanted west when I took to journalism! White's Selborne, dreamthorpe still, Cobbett's birth- What! place Stella's Cottage, and so on. But I could love Selborne if I had nerer loved White's writings; and to me every bit of England (save factory towns) is historie. There are lovely i woodlands between Farnham and Gedalining, especially near a typical village called Elstead. I recall the olema stillness of the aisles in a forest of pines, for instance. Once well ageing again, I passed through Shire and Shallord and Chilworth and Abinger Hammer. It was often a name like that on a signboard that made me turn to left or right, so that my progress on the map twists and Carns in the most seemingly purposelers way. Yet the purpose was always there to see sme place whose name sonaded promising.

Abinger Hammer! It looked very much what you'd expect; and there was a clocktower with the Egure of a saith striking a bell with a hammer. Dorking wasn't the sort of town I expected; but is worth a visit. I turned north through Micklebam to Leatherlead (quaint, with a delight- ful clock tower), my attraction being 4 village called "Stoke d'Abernon. That led me to Cobham, where was a a pretty ina kept by a Tom Some- body. Now, I have's theory that all Toms are the best of good fellows, 30, fading the ale good, I ordered tea alad. It was a nice tea, in a nice gar- den; but I was charged sixpence more than I have ever paid before. I don't believe his name really was Tom, now. It was probably Thomas, add a man christened Thomas is always, some' ow, a wrong up. Just take a mental census of all the Thomase! you've known, and you'll And I'm right.

At Addlestone I talked with an inakeeper who, had worked for the Nippon Yusen Kaisha, At Chertsey I found a man from the Orient. I tock eighteen hour to go from Chert- sey to Stainen, so you may guess I did a lot of conversation, with ale, tr the way. Yet in three hours Ï walked from Staines through Egham and Windsor, and Egham bad one of the worst hills I met anywhere, save that it had a pub half way up, and s companionable landlord.
