SATURDAY'S XEINING.

The second gymkhana meeting of the Hongkong Jockey Club was held, at the Racecourse on Saturday after noon. Although the weather was delightful, the attendance was not so large as usual. Among these present was His Excellency the Governor.

The programme consisted of seven, events, and although there was a scarcity of ponies running, owing to the majority being in Shanghai for " the spring moeting there, the racing was keen and in three events very close finishes were seen.

Although there were only three entries for the Gymkhana Stakes, this event provided a good race with an exciting finish, all three ponies being bunched together at the home straight. It was a neck to neck struggle right up to the winning post. Speckled Mouse (Boyd up) just managed to get home,

spoke well for the co-operation be- Miskin and Henderson 10-1; lost to teween the Chinese and British Grimble and Brearly 3-8, people. (Applause). In London he had been impressed with the very! sympathetic attitude of the British people towarda China and their desire to promote closer commercial relation | with China. In Hongkong to-day he observed the same desire prevailing. There were many reasons why rich co-operation could not fail to be successful, as it had been successful in Hongkong because the British and the Chinese people had many virtuca in common.

#

After referring to the Washington Conference in terms similar to those he used when interviewed by China Mail reporter earlier in the morning Dr. Koo said: Coming from London on my way back to China, I had an opportunity of seeing someth- ing our people in Penang, Singa pore, and to-day in Hongkong; and I find they are

actuated by a true spirit of patriotism for China; and although I have been away for seven years and have not actually reached the Land of my forbears yet, I feel confident that I will find the masses in China equally devoted and attached to the case of their cour try's national welfare. Whatever may be the temporary political trouble in our country on the surface, the people, whether in or outside China, give us positive indications of the great future which is awaiting our country." (Lond applause).
