CHINESE CURRENCY:

THE STERLING PRICE OF SILVER.

THE CHINA MAIL.

In view of the great potential im- portance of China as a market for BA tish manufactured goods, it is tbarght| that the following notes on the Chi-1. nese currency system supplied by a correspondent to the Federation of British Industries, may be of interest Before tracing the course of ex change on China dering the past few months, it may be of value to survey briefy the currency system of that country. When dealing with Eastern exchanges it most be remembered that the majority are based on silver, as in the case f China. In the Commercial Treaty of 1902 between Great Britain and Chins that cruntry agred to provide a national coinage. An Imperial De cree of October, 1905, amended the introduction of a uniform "taer" carreres, but azother Decree of May, 1910, established a standard currency dollar weighing 72 candareens (can- dareen, one-hozdredth part of a tae! ounce).

RAILWAY PROBLEMS.

AUSTRALIA AND CHINA.

The railway problems of countries so diverse in character as AustraEx and China would appear to be rather difficult to discuss with any continuity of argument or criticism. Chins with its huge urea settled for centuries by teeming millions, is a great contrast to Australia with its one or two inhabitants to the square mile, and comparatively speaking all recent comers. That Mr. T. R. Johnson brought the two subjects to- gether in a paper he read on the 13th inst. before the Institute of Transport, is due, not we take it to any fact that the problems of these countries are related or similar, but to the fact that the author's official connection with both has given him first hand experience of each Mc | Johnson's contribution does not, in the case of Australia, carry the matter much further than has been done on previous occasions, this part of his pater dealing largely with the settle- ment of the gauge question, say Engineering.

With regard to Crina, Mr. Johnson Points out that the country averages The average rates for China for these as far as can be ascertaiced about 200 two months were 6.518 and 4.990 inhabitants to the square mile, and dollars to the sterling, which also with an area of about 4,250,000 sq. represent the average maximum and miles has at present about 6,800 miles minimum rates for the year, thus of railway.
