SHACKLETON'S DIARY.
LAST ENTRY SIR HOURS BEFORE DEATH.
**I SAW A LOSE
STAR"
Below are given extracts from Sir. Ernest Shackleton's last diary.
The final entry was made about six hours before the end.came suddenly.
JANUARY 1,
Rest and calm after the storm. The year has begun kindly for us,
It is curious how a certain date be- comes a factor in che's life. Christ- mas Day in the raging gale seemed out of place. I dared not venture to hope that to-day would-be as it wAS. Anxiety has been probing deeply into me, for until the very end of the year things have gone awry.
Engines were unreliable; water was short; there were heavy gales-all that physically can go wrong has done zo, but the spirit of all on board is Bound and good. "There are two points in the adventure of the diver; one when a beggar he prepares to plunge; one when a prince he rises with his pearl."
JANUARY 2.
Another wonderful day, and very cheerful for us after there last days of strees and strain.
At 1 p.m. we passed our first berg.! The old familiar eight aroused in me memories that the strenuous pars had desdened.
Blue caverns shone with the sky glow snatched from heares itself; green spars showed beneath the waters. Ah me! The years that! have gone since, in the pride of young anhood, I first went forth to the fight! I grow old and tired, but must always lead on.
JANUARY 3.
- Another beautiful day. Fortune ms to attend as this New Year, But so anxions have I been when things are going well that I wonder what new difficulty will spring on me.
I find a difficulty in settling down | to write. I am so much on the quil site. “Thankful that I -an be crossed an! the arted as a man.”
JANUARY 1.
At last, after 16 days of turmoil and anxiety on a peaceful, sunshiny day we came to ancher in Grytviken (South Georgia).
How familiar the coast serined! - As we passed down we raw with fall interest the pincs ́ we singgled over after the bast journey.
The interior of South Georgia was crossed for the first time in 1916 by Shackleton, after his ship. the “Endurance,” ́has been lost in the A-tarctic pack, and after a voyage of 803 miles in a small open bost (zom Elephant Island, another desolate, Antarctic island. Shackleton and bia two companiors reached Grytviken în the last stages of exhaustion and got help to rescue their comrades of Elephant Island.
