THE SEAMEN'S STRIKE.

WHAT THE GOVERNMENT DID,

AN OFFICIAL RESUME.

In this week's Government Gmtale, issued late last night, is published the following official account of the Government's participation in the wegotiations during the recent seamen's strike:—

The strike commenced on the 19th Jaanary. On the same day the Goremment published a proclama- tion in Chinese offering to appoint arbitrators for the purpose of settling the dispute. On the 17th Jangary the Government published a further proclamation in Chinese in which it set forth without comment an offer made by the shipowners, and renewed its! offer to appoint arbitrator if the seamen were still dissatisfied.
