FINE EFFORT.
Hongkong has a habit of taking things for granted, but even Hong- kong cannot take for granted the splendid work done by Messrs, Lane, Crawford and Co., and its new enter- prise, the Wiseman Cafe, during a sudden and grave crisis in the life of the community when complete break- down, or anyway serione confusion, would have occasioned no surprise. From the beginning of the general strike, until the Chinese employees finally returned, the European staff, unaided, depleted even by several metubers going to the bakery, gall- antly coped with the unprecedented rush for provisions. During the Brat

ANOTHER STRIKE1
The football referees are on strike. Just over a week ago the China Mail bad an article suggesting that the Hongkong Football Association was too weak, and did not sufficiently support the decisions of these its servants. This week it met and proposed to wash out all past records of offences and start afresh.
Whereuponall the qualified referees downed whistles.
There will probably be no football on Saturday.
