SENATE PROSPECTS.

INTERESTING REPORTS.

LONDON, February 28.

The special progress made by the Senato foreign relations committee in considering and recommending the conference treaties appears to have given much satislac- tion in the United States. The committee with the une nullifying the vexatious reservations to the Pacific' #ptio. already telegraphed ha made a clean sweep, Treaty.

Persident Harding, according to the Daily Telegraph's New York correspondent, durs not believe the reservation adopted is necessary and the only object is to conciliate the irreconcilables. It is uncertain whether the Senate will insit on the reserva- tion but it is accepted by the administration senatore on the theory that it is in line with what friends of the treaty say the treaty means and in order to avoid a prolonged Senate fight which might jeopardise ratifica -

The correspondent is that indications point to the tire work of the co ference being approved by the Seat within a month or tw Senator Lodge believes that the Pacifi- Treaty will be extensively debated, but hopes to see it ratified unchanged as reported from the cotom ttee Sonitors Borah and Johnson will lead the fight against the treaty, offering varion; reservations or proposing chnges.

The Washington Post's political correspondeat believes that adoption of reservation aforementioned astres ratification. The only danger he sees in being is the "well-meaning efforts which enthusiastic fiends of the treaty may make to eliminate the reservation a-d force the Senate to vote on the pack as negotiated."

ARRESTED MANAGER'S DEFENCE.

PARIS, February 28,

M. Peruutte, the arrested general manager of the Banque Industrielle d Chine, has engaged counsel who has drafted a ten-page argument that his client's arrest was not justified and that he should be provisionally released. As regards the sale of shares in the Societe Alsacienne counsel argues that the Banque Industrielle with the Banque Hollando-Americaine sold them at an average price of 300 franes to a third party who actually marketed them. The subsequent rise could therefore in no way by attributed to the Banque Industrielle,
