SILVER DURING 1921.
INTERESTING REVIEW FROM
NEW YORK.
The Financial Review, New York, publishes a review of silver during 1921, of which the following extract's are given :--·
IMPORTS AND EXPORTS.
Production of Mexico, the largest
silver production is estimated by us at 62,000,000 ounces,
or 4,662 263 ounces less than in 1920.
Of Americi exports, Asiatic Bource of countries received about 53,000,000 ounter, Great Britain about 18,200,000 ounces, and the balance of about 19,800 000 ounces way distributed among other countries, of which nearly 4,(KH),000 ounces Mexico in the form of coinage.
Of Great Britain's sports, more than 53,000,000 ounces went to China and India.

silver consigned ne collateral and not sold.
This process has also resulted in thy depletion of the gold reserves of many countries, because paper-money is still as impractical for international usage as it has been especially during and since the world war.
Coinago for the past seven years amounts to more than 1,700,000 000
ounces, and production is about
600,000,000 ounces less.
CHINA AND INDIA,
Of Britain's imports, £9,956,837 actual for 11 mon:ba, or about 55,000,000 ounces, £3,094,052 repre- sents receipts from America £2,646,088 from West Africa, £1,669,105 from Trance, and £1,223.311 from Holland.
The West African item is interes fing. There is no silver production in West Africa and this group includes former German possessions. It is likely that German silver marks have been imported and that the same countries have received paper money and some eilver coins 500 rather than 900 fine, in exchange.
More than 700,000,000 peoples in China and India striving for an industrial and anxious to do business with the country best able to supply its needs the United States of Americu-have been compelled in Britain's imports from America are the past year to conduct a large part double in value and triple in volume of their import business in terms of as compared with those of 1920. sterling exchange and with gold, and Imports from France are not equal to to the disadvantage of America. those of the previous year, but they But both countries have contioned are still a large part of the total. their traditional policy of absorbing Consignments from Holland are under- nearly 200,000,000 ounces or silver stood to represent silver from yearly or much in excess of total Germany. world production during the past seven years.
DECLINE IN OUTPUT. Production for. 1921 is smaller
This is apparently the reason why because of the decline in output of "panics" in those countries are of America and Australia and, to a much comparatively small significance and more modified extent, by Mexico, that China and India are likely to be Although purchases of domestic silver the strongest, financially and under the Pittman law will amount to commercially, during the next few around 08,000,000 ounces, production will be less than 40,000,000, ounces,
years.
Output of Australia is again likely to be around the law figures of 1920. It was less than 1,500,000 ounces in 1920, compared with 7,430,770 in
1919.
Canadian production is likely to be around 10,000,000 ounces, compared with 13,330,357 ounces in 1920,
That production held in the United States even at the lower volume was due chiefly to larger operations in the new and old camps of Nevada. For the same reasons we may expect a continuance of this record this year, especially at Tonopah, Cortez, Divide and Candelaria,
THE TREND OF EVENTS.
In attempting to determine future trend in the silver situation, it is well to remember that silver is both a commodity and a monetary medium. Sensational developments are likely at any time and especially if any effort is made to approach stability in Europe. This is equally true of gold.
These facts should also be borne in mind: that world production is constantly decreasing and con-- sumption increasing. That a con- siderable amount of silver coinage has disappeared in the past several years, and that even a debased silver, coin,
authorized, would produce a shortage a acute that silver prices would inevitably advance to the 15- to-1 or 18 to-1 ratio. At present the world price is about 311-to-1.
Japan has about 303,000,000 yen in paper notes outstanding and has found that it is ratherd ficult to do business with this kind of money, especially in China. Against this issue its silver requirements are around 180,000,000. oubles.
The United States government is Oparation of the Pittman law in This decrease is chiefly due to the still in the domestic market for 121,- Amerion has tended to maintain curtailed operations of the copper
