ASSEMBLY DEBATE.
LONDON, February 22.
The strike commandoes on the Rand are continuing their attempts to prevent the miners from working, but in spite of intimidation over a hundred additional men, returned to work yesterday.
Great interest centred in the opening of the debate in the Assembly at Capetown on General Hertzog's motion for compulsory arbitration in the strike dispute.
Mr. Boydell, the Labour leader, accused the Gov ernment of siding with the mine owners by using police: for recruiting "scabs.”.
General Smute said that General Hertzog'e pro- posal was as inacceptable as compulsory arbitration bad been a failure in Australia. The only way to settle the dispute was to appoint an impartial board which would report to Parliament.
