At the close of the lawn tennis sca-: son (competitive) men put away their ducks and flannels and women their skirts, blouse, aud tennis jumpers, of all kinds of cut and material. The question of suitable tennis garb for women for men it is long since established is worth consideration.
First, a word masculine. In the early days of the game there was experimentation. The great Lawford and Lewis and Williams played in flannel knickerbockers and black stockings and flannel or silk shirts.
The Renshaws in their first years... | and Lawford and H. W. W. Wilber force sometimes followed them- wore sleeveless singlets.
The singlet has been revived for men in the form of a shirt, with the sleeve cut at the elbow. It has no sthetic value, and in cold weather does not protect the arm. The rolled- up sleeve looks better, just as crdinary dress must be finished off with a collar, and it keeps the arm warm.
A would-be careless habit is the long sleeve unbuttoned. It has its purpose--to untrammel arm-action and yet to keep the arm protected down to the wrist. The sweater, with club colours, has always been popular, but it is a nuisance to put on and to take off over the bead.
The gilet is more convenient and looks better. But the gilet without sleayes is a horrible sight. The long. white blanket-coat is of course a per- manent over all.
Now, as to'feminine garb.
I have photographs of matches The skirt covered the long ago. ankles, and most women wore white gloves-not for show but to get a grip of the racket. Some do it still.
The most beautiful tennis skirt I have seen was that worn by Mlle. Wimbledon in the Lenglen at
last championship-accordion-pleated white silk. But it was too shimmery for an athletic game.
́Cream-coloured pleated skirts are lately fashionable; but somehow one desiderates white and pleatless.
The skirt of dack is sometimes too full of starch, but when well cut it is the most suitable for women and most satisfying to the eye.
The single-piece coat-skirt of woo lias been worn a good deal. In hot weather it is out of the question, and always it drage on the shoulders.
Probably the most efficient and comfortable tennis garment is a coat- skirt of thin silk or silk-like material. It involves the use of a belt, but this need not be tight.
Corsets should not be worn; a body- belt is better. Bloomers of silk, no petticoat, thick rubber-soled shoca- boots are too hot-and a woollen. jumper for cold weather--these make -a good outfit.
