THE TRIANGULAR TOURNEY.

NAVY V. ARMY.

Having defeated the Club by the marrow margin of 12 suas in the first match of the Christmas-New Year triangular cricket tournament, the Army team entered the second of the wo-day fixtures yesterday against

the Navy.

The Army started batting at 10.30, with Olliver and Davies at the wickets. They put up a fruitful partnership which yielded 107 runs befors they were separated. Both batted vigorously, but gave only difficult chances, which the Navy fielders could not be blamed for not accepting. Davies scored 59: which included a pretty six off Wood. Olliver was run out with 48. Spinks also carried a good bat and contribut- fed a useful 57, the second best score of the innings. The others were got out comparatively cheaply, the highest contributions being 18. There were ho fewer than 27

extras. The

Army innings closed early for 271. Stevens was the Navy's out standing bowler, and in bis over just before the tiffin bell, which was a maiden, he captured two wickets.

The Navy opened their innings with Jotham and Franks. They played nice game together, and Jotham was extremely unlucky not to have made his century. He stayed the end of the in almost to day's play, and was caught by Ed- wards in the slips just before stumps are drawn. However, his 75 war

A BHANGHAI COMMENT,

"Certain of the Chinese shipowners in Hongkong, says Shipping and Engineering (Shanghai), are perturbed the attitude of the

Affairs at. Scoretary for Chinese Hongkong, in regard to his sction concerning third-class passengers on the B., Hwah Ping." Briefly, the salient facts of the cass, os far as can bo ascertained at present, are as followe:--

The Chung Wah 8.8. Co. was form ed this year (in August, we beliove) with a capital of HK$4,000,000 for the purpose of maintaning a line of steamships between Chinese ports and Valparaiso, the capital being mainly anbscribed by Chinese residents in

Peru and Chile.. Exactly what ships the Company operates is not clear, but one of the vessels is the 8.8. "Hwah Ping" which has already mde ne trip to South American ports

nder the agis of the Chung Wah S.8. Co. In the early! part of the present month, when the Hwah Ping" was ready to proceed again to South America, the Company received a communication from the S.C.A. forbidding the ship to carry third-class passengers, apparently for the reason that the description of these third class passengers as 'busi- ness men was a misnomer, and that

17

they were actually "workmen," which

we take to mean conlies. On the ground that the majority of the passengers objected to by the S.CA. were in possession of passports which had been vised by the Peruvian Con- sul, the Company's representatives at Hongkong adopt the attile that the S.C.A. is distinctly out of waist a forbidding their departure.

It is possible that the Chung Wah 8.8. Company sces only its own side
