The word Christmas is really Christmass and was so called because on that day a mass was celebrated in connection with the birth of Christ. This old word, mass, although not of common usage in the Church of England nowadays, still has its survival in such words as Michaelmas, and it reminds us that Christ 21 15 is * special time for Christians to join together in holy and joyful worship at the altar. "Our Prayer Book says that all corn- municants should make their com munious at least three times a year, of which Easter is oue-universal custon has made Christmas one of the other times.

Although we remember the Nativity of Christ on December 25th, this is not necessarily the correct day, but that matters little as long as we all celebrate the occasion at the same titne. We used to keep Christmas Day on January 6th, and it is still called Old Christmas Day, and some scholars tell us that Christ was born not 1921 years ago but six years more than that.

8. Silvester, Bishop of Rome (314- 335 A.D.) is remembered next Satur day. He is famous as the Pope under whom the great Emperor Constantine became Christian.

An enjoyable social evening was given last Monday by the ladies of S. Peter's Church. By kind permission of the Warden and students it was held in S. John's Hall.

Daring the evening a good pro- gramme of music items was present- ed, broken by a clever fire display and some dances and gamrs.

The treasurer of S. Peter's Church, Mr. S. Jones has now returned from

home-leave, and both he and his wife have received a warm welcoine in church circles.

Mr. H. A. Allen has been acting as treasurer during his absence; the con- gregation is very thankful to him for his most generous and valuable ser vices, and hopes that he will not entirely relinquish bis hold on affairs, but will act conjointly with Mr. Jones i managing the secretarial and treasurer work.

A Confirmation Service was held

by the Bishop of Victoria at S. John's Cathedral on Wednesday, S. Thomas' Day.

Before the actual laying-on-of hands the Bishop gave a most useful address on the meaning of Confirma tion, showing that just as the apostles, who were the first bishops, laid their hands in olden days, and were thus instrumental in the bestowing of the gift of the Holy Ghost, so the bishops of to-day are used by God in the giving of the Holy Ghost. Although there is now no outward manifesta- tion such as the gift of 'tongues, yet that fiery gift is surely within us, The Collect and Lessons deal en-alter Confirmation, to lead us into all firely with the coming of Christ to goodness if we will allow ourselves to earth as the Babe of Bethlehem, be guided. born of the Virgin Mary, truly God and truly man, being born of woman, through the miracle of the operation of the Holy Ghost, by which God was the Father, For the Gospel, that wonderful introduction from S. John's Gospel is jused, by which Christ is shown to be God in human flesh, come to give us power to become true sons of God. And the Word was made flesh an dwelt among us and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only-begotten

Then the Bishop showed that Christians need in food to sustain them in their life of war-fare against evil, and that its fulness could only be obtained by a regular attendance at Holy Communion which was the centre of Christian worship.

Seven candidates were presented to the Bishop by the Cathedral, eleven by S. Peter's Church, five from the Army and two from the Navy.

For the first three days after Christmas Day we have festivals which may be linked very closely to the season.
